Did You Know That Trichologists Are Certified Nutritionists?

By Trichologist Althea R. Gooden

When most people think about hair loss or hair breakage, they immediately think about shampoos, conditioners, oils, or expensive hair treatments. While these products certainly have their place, healthy hair begins much deeper than what you apply to your scalp.

It starts from within.

Many people are surprised to learn that a certified Trichologist is also trained in nutrition. Our role is not simply to look at your hair-we assess your overall health, lifestyle, diet, medications, stress levels, and nutritional status to identify the root cause of your hair and scalp concerns.

A Trichologist understands that the hair follicle is one of the most metabolically active structures in the body. Without the proper nutrients, the body will prioritize vital organs first, leaving the hair deprived of the nourishment it needs to grow strong and healthy.

Treating Hair from the Inside Out

As Trichologists, we believe in a holistic approach to hair restoration.

Rather than simply masking the problem, we ask:

  • Why is the hair shedding?
  • Why is it breaking?
  • Why is the scalp inflamed?
  • Is there a nutritional deficiency?
  • Could medications, illness, menopause, stress, or hormonal changes be contributing?

Once we identify the underlying cause, we create a personalized treatment plan that includes professional scalp therapy, proper home care, and nutritional support.

Hair health is truly a reflection of internal health.

My Daily Vitamin Routine

As shown in the photo above, I organize my daily vitamins and minerals in a weekly pill planner. This simple habit helps me stay consistent and ensures I never miss an important supplement.

I encourage many of my clients to do the same.

Consistency is one of the biggest keys to correcting nutritional deficiencies. Taking supplements sporadically will not produce the same results as following a structured daily routine.

Does the Time of Day Matter?

Absolutely!

Your body absorbs certain vitamins and minerals more efficiently depending on when they are taken.

Here are a few general guidelines:

Morning (A.M.)

  • B-complex vitamins for energy metabolism
  • Vitamin D3 (preferably with a meal containing healthy fats)
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron (if recommended), ideally taken away from calcium

Evening (P.M.)

  • Magnesium, which may promote relaxation
  • Zinc (if tolerated with food)
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin E (best taken with a meal containing healthy fats)

Some nutrients work together, while others compete for absorption. For example, calcium may interfere with iron absorption, which is why timing can make a significant difference.

Always follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations, especially if you are taking prescription medications or have underlying medical conditions.

Essential Nutrients for Healthy Hair

Healthy hair depends on a steady supply of nutrients, including:

  • Protein – the building block of hair
  • Iron – supports oxygen delivery to the hair follicle
  • Zinc – aids tissue repair and healthy follicle function
  • Selenium – provides antioxidant protection
  • Vitamin D – supports the normal hair growth cycle
  • Vitamin C – promotes collagen production and improves iron absorption
  • Vitamin E – protects cells from oxidative stress
  • Omega-3 fatty acids -nourish the scalp and reduce inflammation
  • Magnesium – supports hundreds of biochemical processes within the body

When these nutrients are deficient, the body often signals the problem through excessive shedding, thinning, slow growth, brittle hair, or increased breakage.

Healthy Hair Is More Than a Good Shampoo

Professional shampoos and treatments are important because they maintain a healthy scalp environment and protect the hair shaft. However, even the best products cannot replace nutrients that the body lacks.

A healthy scalp, proper nutrition, stress management, quality sleep, hydration, and consistent professional care all work together to produce healthier hair.

Final Thoughts

Beautiful hair is not created by chance,it is created through knowledge, consistency, and a healthy body.

As a Trichologist, my mission is to educate my clients, identify the true cause of their hair concerns, and develop a personalized plan that restores hair health from the inside out.

Remember, your hair is one of the first places your body reveals nutritional imbalances. Listen to what it is telling you.

Start with your health, nourish your body daily, stay consistent with your vitamins and minerals, and let your hair reflect the wellness that begins within.

Your hair deserves more than a quick fix- it deserves a healthy foundation.
