Twelve years ago, I heard the words that changed my life  “You have breast cancer.” Stage Two. In that moment, everything around me paused, but my faith, my will, and my purpose grew stronger. Today, as a survivor and a trichologist, I stand behind the chair with a deeper understanding of compassion, care, and the power of healing touch.

Each October, as we honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am reminded that survival is not just about overcoming cancer  it’s about how you use that experience to lift others. Every time a client sits in my chair and quietly says, “I was just diagnosed with breast cancer,” I relive my own journey. But now, I can offer more than empathy  I can offer knowledge, comfort, and hope.

The Touches Have Changed

When you’ve been through breast cancer, the way you touch and handle your clients changes forever. The experience teaches you to move slower, softer, and with greater intention. I no longer see hair as just hair  I see a story, a spirit, and a sign of inner healing.

As a trichologist and survivor, I’ve learned that the scalp and hair become deeply sensitive during and after chemotherapy or radiation. Touch becomes therapeutic   not just for the client, but also for me. Every shampoo, massage, or styling session becomes a moment of restoration, a reminder that beauty can grow again from even the most difficult seasons.

When and How to Treat

There are moments when you can treat, and moments when you must step back.

During active chemotherapy or radiation, I often avoid treatments involving heat or chemical products. Instead, I focus on hydration, scalp comfort, and gentle cleansing. The dehydration machine can be beneficial only when the scalp and skin are stable   never when sensitivity or open areas are present.

Each survivor’s journey is unique. Products that are soothing, fragrance-free, and rich in moisture are essential. I use formulas that calm the scalp, reduce dryness, and support regrowth without irritation. The goal is always comfort first, beauty second, because true healing begins within.

Moving from Surviving to Listening

After 12 years, I have learned that being behind the chair as a survivor is not just about styling  it’s about listening.

Every client’s story takes me back to my own: the fear, the strength, the faith, and the gratitude. Listening reminds me why I continue to do what I do  to help others feel whole again, to remind them that they are not alone, and that beauty is not lost; it simply transforms.

In Closing

This month, and every month, I celebrate all who are fighting, surviving, and thriving. To my clients who trust me with their stories and their hair, thank you. You inspire me daily.

Cancer may change the body, but it cannot take away faith, hope, or beauty. Behind the chair, healing continues  one touch, one story, one survivor at a time.
