Did You Know? The Touch During and After Chemotherapy Should Be Different

When someone is going through chemotherapy or in the recovery stage, the way we touch, massage, or handle their scalp and body must change. Chemotherapy affects not only the hair and scalp but also the skin, circulation, and overall sensitivity.

During this time, the body needs a gentler, slower, and more intentional touch. Regular pressure or traditional massage movements can sometimes be too intense for the lymphatic system or for delicate, healing tissues. That’s why both massage therapists and trichologists play an important role in providing care that supports healing and comfort.

 Why the Touch Matters

Chemotherapy can make the scalp tender, dry, or even sore. Using lighter movements helps to:

• Soothe the scalp without overstimulating it

• Encourage lymphatic flow and relaxation

• Support emotional wellbeing

• Create a calm environment that promotes healing

At The Salon Hair & Scalp Clinic, we believe that every touch during this time should come from a place of understanding, compassion, and knowledge.
