In recent years, non-invasive technologies for treating hair loss have become a welcome alternative to harsh chemicals and painful procedures. One such innovative tool is the ultraviolet (UV) rake—a hand-held device used to stimulate blood flow to the scalp, encouraging a healthier environment for hair growth.

But what exactly is it, and when should it be used?

What Is an Ultraviolet Rake?

An ultraviolet rake is a type of high-frequency therapy tool designed with multiple prongs that emit a gentle UV light and electrical current. The name “rake” comes from its shape, resembling a wide-toothed comb.

It works by:

• Delivering mild thermal stimulation to the scalp

• Promoting microcirculation in the scalp tissues

• Oxygenating hair follicles

• Assisting in lymphatic drainage

• Offering mild antibacterial benefits to maintain scalp hygiene

The Link Between Blood Flow and Hair Loss

Healthy hair growth depends on optimal blood circulation to the scalp, which delivers oxygen and vital nutrients to hair follicles. Many individuals with androgenetic alopecia, traction alopecia, or stress-related hair loss often have compromised circulation in the scalp tissues.

As I outline in my book, Hair and Scalp Health: Do’s and Don’ts, blood flow plays a crucial role in follicle rejuvenation and maintenance. Without it, the follicles can shrink and become dormant—leading to excessive shedding and thinning.

When Should the UV Rake Be Used?

The UV rake is best used in the following scenarios:

• During the early stages of hair thinning

• As part of a trichology treatment plan for scalp rehabilitation

• When there’s buildup on the scalp impeding follicle health

• In combination with hair growth serums (The Salon follicle renew) or treatments (as it helps with absorption)

Important Note: The UV rake is not a standalone cure for hair loss. It’s a supportive tool and should be used under the guidance of a trained professional. Overuse or improper use may overstimulate the scalp, especially for individuals with sensitive skin or active inflammation.

How Often Should It Be Used?

In my clinic, I typically recommend clients start with 1-2 treatments per week, depending on the severity of their condition. We assess results over a 4- to 10-week period, alongside scalp treatments and proper nutrition.

Final Thoughts

The UV rake is a gentle, effective way to stimulate circulation and awaken sluggish follicles—especially when hair loss is linked to poor scalp function. However, like all tools, its success depends on how and when it’s used.
